Art Workshops - a selection of my favorites

Tudor Buildings
A drawing workshop that focuses on patterns within Tudor facades and building shapes. Each child produces a single drawing of a Tudor building which is then cut out and joined together with other drawings to produce rows and streets of buildings.

Year 11 COPE EMAS

Wedding Dress
Using only card, pencils and glue the whole class work together to produce all the material and fine details for this stunning wedding dress. It is a great exercise in how to manipulate card with hands, fingers and scissors.

Hand Made Books
Why not make your own sketch and note books and fill them with your own creative work? This workshop demonstrates the basics of book making and gets pupils and staff producing a wide range of individually made books. The simplest books can take less than ten minutes to make.

Ancient Egyptian Paintings
The iconic figures of ancient Egypt lend themselves to a terrifically bright and colourful painting and drawing workshop. Great for all ages and abilities.

Etching Workshop
This drawing workshop uses similar techniques to that of etching and allows us to produce excellent results in a short amount of time. It works on both small and large scale drawings and works equally well on its own as it does along side other materials like paint and ink. Suitable for Key Stage 2 to Higher Education.

Kandinsky, Paintings and Wagner
This workshop looks at the ideas and imagery of Kandinsky's paintings and demonstrates how music can be used as stimulus and inspiration for the creation of shapes, patterns and colours within pupils' drawings and paintings. Perfect for Key Stage 1.

Maori Stage Design for Haka War Dance
A workshop producing four large painted screens to be incorporated into the Maori, Haka dance performed by year 4 children. The screens are based on a set of children’s drawings inspired by Maori shapes and colours.

Withies Structures
A terrific combination of sculpture, collage and painting. Pupils build up a complex structure from lots of basic shapes which they then paint, draw or ink. A great workshop for practising general dexterity and fine motor skills and introducing pupils to a wide range of art materials and methods.

Canopic Jars for Special Objects
Each child is asked to chose a Special Object personal to them and build a Canopic Jar or Vessel to contain or symbolise their important object. The workshop looks at Ancient Egyptian art and in particular Canopic Jars. The vessels are modelled out of Magic Clay and painted with acrylics.

Self Portraits
A great workshop for encouraging children to draw difficult subjects. Pupils are encouraged to be brave and adventurous with their drawing tools and embrace the many mistakes they might make along the way.

Masks
Always a lively and exciting workshop, that applies a hands on approach to the drawing, design and construction of every mask. Each workshop focuses on a certain aspect of traditional and contemporary mask making, and encourages pupils to be as creative and colourful as possible.

Viking Jewellery and Clothing
This workshop uses Viking and Celtic designs as a starting point for the production of costume pieces and body sculptures. The basic shapes are made from card which can be covered in a wide range of drawing and craft materials like pens, ink, paint, collage, raffia etc.

Paintings from The Ark
A workshop based around the biblical story of The Ark. Ideal for Key Stage 1, the workshop starts with some basic observational drawing of wooden animal figures and the Ark. This workshop also functions as a good introduction to simple painting skills.

Plaster Casting
A sculpture workshop that gets pupils modelling designs into clay which are then open cast with Plaster of Paris. During the casting process pupils can experiment with positive and negative shapes and a range of sculpting materials and processes.

Weaving
A great workshop that combines a range of painting and sculpting skills. You can produce just about any shape with woven card, from very small objects to large collaborative works. Most of the fun is figuring out how to make the shapes and wrestling thirty strips of coloured card.

Silk Banners
A set of workshops exploring themes of cultural design and cooperation. Each group learns how to produce a large silk banner and then take this knowledge back to their school. This has been used for a Winsford Arts Festival.

Drawing with Hundertwasser
A workshop that looks at the colourful imagination of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Artist and Architect. This workshop explores the use of shape and colour in art, and encourages children to invent their own colourful world through expressive drawing and painting.

Australian Aboriginal Animal Paintings
This workshop explores the stories, symbols and themes of traditional aboriginal art. Pupils produce drawings from a range of imagery, depicting human, plant and animal figures drawn in the traditional style of bark, cave and rock paintings.

Firework Sculptures
Originally produced for the theme of 'Celebration', these sculptures are so much fun to produce and utilise such a wide range of sculpting, painting and making skills that they have become little explosions of creative thinking and making.

Indian Patchwork Drawings
A collaborative drawing workshop that looks at the decorative designs of Indian textiles. Great for producing big stunning work for the wall and teaching pupils individual drawing and making skills along with collaborative approaches to art.

Forest Drawings
Drawing a range of objects that had been collected from the forest on a residential visit. Lots of observational drawing, working out different compositions and experimenting with different drawing and painting materials, including making some mud based paint from the forest floor.

Big Hands - INSET Day
An INSET day project to do with 'Hands'. This project was designed to get staff working together to create a piece of art for the entrance area, something that demonstrated the school's commitment to the staff and pupis.

Greek Patterns
A workshop designed to enhance observational drawing skills through a process of concentrated drawing. The complexity of Ancient Greek patterns makes it an ideal subject, with its distinctive style and earthy colours. Pupils are encouraged to both draw what they see and embellish their designs with their own imagination and a healthy amount of inks and oil pastels.

Simone Martini - Horse and Rider
A drawing and painting workshop based around the work of Italian artist Simone Martini.

Landscape Painting
This is a painting and drawing workshop that starts with looking at a pupils' surroundings whether it be in school, a day out or on a residential visit. The workshop experiments with a range of materials and paintings. The workshop also looks at places other landscape painters have painted and the way in which they worked.

Reception Painting
Painting with reception can lead to unexpectedly wonderful results. A well structured painting workshop and educational experience, ideal for large scale paintings, with children painting together in groups on the same or a separate painting

Painting Liverpool’s Cathedrals
An observational drawing and painting workshop which followed a visit to the two Cathedrals of Liverpool. The paintings were based on the buildings' exteriors and the glorious colours to be found in the Cathedrals' windows.

Monet's Garden
An observational drawing and painting workshop where children are given real flowers to draw and study. The purpose of using real flowers is to get the children used to looking in detail at the things they are drawing. I have found that this workshop has worked really well with, key stage one children. This workshop is also a great way to introduce children to artists work, such as Monet’s Garden paintings or Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.

Owls
This drawing and painting workshop encourages children to take risks and experiment with different combinations of drawing materials and techniques. The workshop helps pupils to feel more comfortable and confident at producing art work and allows pupils the chance to evaluate their own experiments and drawings as they progress.

'Here I Am' Sunflower
This workshop combines simple drawing exercises with enlarging tools, such as OHP, to create large scale wooden cut outs which are then painted and decorated. This can be tailored to any subject, is hard wearing and ideal for brightening up halls, corridors, classrooms and entrances.

Hand Made Paper
Time to roll you sleeves up and get stuck in. This workshop lets children make their own paper and incorporate their designs into its surface and layers with a wide variety of materials. I have often used this workshop as an introduction to Japanese Arts and Crafts.

Landscape Drawing
This is a great drawing workshop for residential visits, especially at the Conway Centre in Anglesey, come rain or shine.
